HVPLS - Scaling VPLS to the Next Level
Overview Combining the cost-effectiveness of Ethernet with the service delivery, traffic engineering, scalability and reliability of MPLS, VPLS has proven to be an effective and inexpensive way to provide a multipoint Layer 2 Ethernet business services, as well as network edge infrastructure to residential voice, video and data (Triple Play) services. However, as deployments started to reach some of the largest Ethernet networks in the world, service providers, municipalities and large government agencies which deployed Ethernet Infrastructures have reached the need to scale their networks orders of magnitude larger. Hierarchical VPLS was defined to address these requirements for greater scale and network resiliency.
