Ethernet White Papers

Removing the Barriers to Mass Carrier Ethernet Deployments

Overview With triple play services, every subscriber is a network monitor. A failure in one service will most likely affect others, and a loss of a single subscriber is a triple loss of revenue. Increasing demands on both network reliability and performance are driving the requirement for more capable equipment end-to-end, from the Ethernet access through the edge and the core of the network. In the past, a low-cost Layer 2 device may have addressed these needs. However, the escalating requirements are generating tremendous pressure to roll out devices with carrier-grade hardware, modular operating systems, MPLS/VPLS, sub 50 milisecond failover and other true carrier grade reliability and performance characteristics - features that have been compromised in the past due to cost.
