Microsoft first announced plans for Longhorn in 2001. The next version of Windows finally has an official name: Windows Vista. The advertising tagline for Vista is "Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world," according to a video...
Vista, the name that Microsoft has chosen to christen its next-generation operating system, is causing a few headaches in Redmond as two non-profit organisations are claiming it is too similar to the name of specialist software that they produce.
The updated Windows Server Longhorn code is available only to participants in a private beta test program and not available via MSDN or TechNet, Microsoft said. BitLocker Drive Encryption is meant to protect data on computers when lost or stolen.
Windows Vista has IPv6 built in, as does the upcoming Windows Server Longhorn release, which also supports IPSec. He pitched BitLocker, a disk drive encryption feature in the higher-end version of Vista, as a way to lock down the data on a PC.
The encryption technology is designed to make life tougher for computer thieves and to prevent embarrassing breaches. Additionally, high-end editions of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system include an encryption feature called BitLocker.
Windows XP and Windows Vista are not impacted by the DNS flaw. The attacks happen by sending rigged data to the service, which by design is meant to help map text-based internet addresses to numeric internet protocol (IP) addresses.
