Gen 2 Implications for Smart Label Printing

Overview Gen 2 will not immediately or completely displace other RFID technologies, and the many iterations of the standard itself assures there will be diversity within the Gen 2 user community. Organizations that currently produce smart labels, or will in the mid-term future, need to recognize this diverse RFID environment and plan accordingly. This paper explains the implications Gen 2 has for smart label printing, illustrating the need to support multiple RFID protocols, upgrade installed printer/encoders to support Gen 2, and identify and avoid potential obstacles and costs.
