A Stronger Case for Gift Cards

Overview These days gift cards are the most popular form of gift to give and receive among young people, and their sales presence is powerful enough to garner them exclusive space in retail stores. In fact, giant grocers like Pathmark and Safeway are committing high-value retail space in their stores to third-party gift card programs. In these stores, consumers can purchase gift cards from perhaps 20 to 30 other retailers such as Nordstrom and Dick's Sporting Goods. The consumer advantage is convenience. The grocer's advantage is a percentage commission on the sale of the card. The third-party retailer's advantage is obvious.
