Where Did My Business Go?: The Value of Monitoring Data Backups
Overview The backup process remains undervalued in the IT infrastructure. Simple in concept, backups copy data from one location (where it resides) to another location. Backing up entire systems used to be easy - put system machines into single-user mode (taking the system offline), back up the Operating System (OS), applications, and databases, and then bring the machines back online. But business needs are now more demanding; most systems must be available 24x7 providing core business services, hosting applications, or running various batch processes. While backups remain a simple process, this paper discusses how enacting the process is becoming even more complex, driving the need to automate the backup monitoring activity.
