Metro Ethernet as a Wide Area Technology and Why It Must Be Secured

Overview Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) have emerged as a key network infrastructure among enterprises looking to connect their users across vast networking topologies. A MAN sits between a Local Area Network (LAN) and a Wide Area Network (WAN) to enable sharing of resources across a region. As networks expand, both geographically and in number of users, the need for greater bandwidth capacity has become an increasingly important issue. In response, the use of Ethernet-based MANs has grown in popularity, and, thus, the term "Metro Ethernet" has emerged. A Metro Ethernet Network (MEN) connects geographically separated enterprise LANs in a metro area using Ethernet.
