White Paper: Nokia IP VPN - Meta-Hop Basics

Overview Meta-Hop solves a problem. How to administer a large dynamic VPN network - dynamic in the sense of changing gateways and changing networks. The administration of IPSec selectors for networks does not scale well. Meta-Hop dynamically ties routing updates to the IPSec policy database. Networks can be added/deleted through the VPN and the correct IPSec selectors will be dynamically altered. Administration now scales with the number of gateways (not with networks times gateways). Meta-Hop routing (a.k.a. Routing over IPSec) currently consists of two aspects: self-learning and self-healing. Self-learning incorporates traditional routing protocols (like RIP, OSPF, static, or connected routes) with the IPSec sub-sytem. Using the Meta-Hop routes corresponding IPSec selectors are created to protect that traffic.
