Integrity Virtual Machines: Best Practices for Using Files as Virtual Mass Storage

Overview The HP Integrity Virtual Machine product supports several logical storage entities for use as virtual hard disks, including physical disk, CD/DVD drive, LUN, logical volume, and files. The mapping of a virtual mass storage to a given type of logical storage is often referred to as 'Backing storage.' For example, the mapping of a virtual storage device to a file on the VM Host is referred to as 'File backing storage.' With file backing storage, any file on a mounted file system can be used as a storage device on a Virtual Machine (VM). Using files for virtual disk drives provides a high level of flexibility for VM mass storage.
