Requirements and Technologies for Next-Generation Wireless Systems

Overview Third Generation (3G) systems are in the state of introduction and early adoption for most parts of the globe. They still have to prove their public acceptance and financial viability. Wireless Ethernet (IEEE standard 802.11) has emerged as a successful and cost-effective solution in recent years to provide high data rate Internet access to stationary and mobile devices although only in a confined local area. Thinking beyond these systems raises many questions for future wireless communication systems. This paper survey considers three papers that deal with several aspects of upcoming wireless systems. They attempt to identify research directions, raise key issues, or present potential solutions for these systems.
