Overview Mobile communication presents a number of challenges to speech technology such as the limited resources available in the terminals in addition to the bandwidth constraints and the errors occurring in transmissions over mobile networks. These challenges need to be solved before Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is ready for widespread use in the context of personal communication environments. This paper gives an overview of the problems inherent in the recently developed network based ASR with an emphasis on the robustness issues that are highly influenced by network degradations.
