VoIP - IP Telephony White Papers

Managing Call Flows Using SIP

Overview This is the fifth of six technical briefing papers that discusses the Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP, which is used to manage the call establishment and disconnect procedures within converged networks. SIP, defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), has been implemented within a number of systems, including Internet Protocol (IP)-based telephones, IP-based Private Branch Exchanges (PBXs), and carrier networks. SIP provides many of the functions defined in the H.323 standard developed by the International Telecommunication Union — Telecommunication Standards Sector (ITU-T), but with lower complexity and overhead. Key areas discussed include:

  • SIP Architecture
  • SIP Messages
  • SIP-related Protocols
  • Case Study: Analyzing SIP Phone Connections
