UK Retailer Moves Warehouse Management System From UNIX to SUSE Linux and Reduces Licensing Costs by 30 Percent

Overview Farmfoods Limited is one of the UK's most successful privately-owned food retailers, with over 300 stores throughout the country, 3300 employees and turnover of £420 million. Farmfoods had a choice of replacing its servers and using the same UNIX systems, or using a Linux system for its Warehouse Management System (WMS). The company wanted a reliable and flexible system that would also help reduce overhead costs. Farmfoods has outsourced its IT maintenance and development to Valley Technology Ltd, an established IT services company and a solutions partner of Novell. Valley Technology had been using Linux and open source tools to enhance Farmfoods' bespoke systems for several years and recommended rewriting the WMS to run on SUSE Linux.
