May 2006 IT Priorities Report

Overview In the May 2006 survey of IT priorities of medium to large U.S. organizations, IT decision makers report spending more on hardware than other solutions, followed by software and wired and wireless networking projects. Among IT project plans 12 months from now, software infrastructure initiatives will account for the largest portion of IT spending, with hardware and networking spending positioned as the #2 and #3 greatest allocations. Security ranks #4 in planned spending, but traditionally security is the most volatile IT budget item, with actual investments shifting abruptly to tackle new outbreaks as needed. We'll be monitoring the variance between the proportion of planned security spending versus actual over the next few months.

CNET Network's IT Priorities Research Program surveys technology decision makers in medium and large organizations each month and asks them about their current and planned IT spending. The study is designed to provide a near-real-time snapshot of business technology project priorities over two timeframes: now and 12 months in the future. CNET has been publishing these data since November 2002.
