Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID): Drivers, Challenges and Public Policy Considerations

Overview Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is one of several automatic identification sensor-based technologies consisting of three key elements: RFID tags; RFID readers (transceivers); and a data collection, distribution, and management system that has the ability to identify or scan information with increased speed and accuracy. There are significant drivers for industries and governments to develop and rollout RFID solutions throughout value chains. RFID touches on several regulatory and/or policy issues highlighted in this paper. These include international trade, intellectual property rights, standards, spectrum, security, and privacy. RFID's benefits and potential pitfalls should be considered within the wider context of its impact on economies and society.
