Shandong Meteorology Bureau Uses Intel Architecture to Speed Up Weather Forecasts by Up to Seven Times Faster

Overview Shandong Province, with its complex topography, manifests an unpredictable climatic condition. It is an area in China that is frequently affected by monsoons. Accurate weather forecast plays a critical role in providing climatic information for exercising necessary preventive measures to minimize damage brought by the destructive weather. The Shandong Meteorology Bureau faced the challenge of improving the computing speed of its weather forecast system to provide speedy and accurate weather forecasts to the community. Shandong Province changed existing IT platform used for computing weather forecasts to a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and deployed Intel architecture. They used 64-bit Intel Xeon processors as the basis for the HPC cluster.
