Mobilizing HP: Project Management as an Executive Priority

Overview Compaq's original business case for the Primavera implementation of Primavera software anticipated far-reaching effects throughout the enterprise. However, external events, such as Compaq's merger with HP, moved so quickly that Compaq's Program Management Office (PMO) was thrust into the limelight, reconstituted as the organization's PMO, and given multiple new responsibilities. The merger demanded a new PMO that could take on project management reorganization of unprecedented scale, speed, scope, and impact. Based on its successful management of IT projects, the PMO was rapidly expanded to manage projects across Global Operations (which at HP includes areas such as Customer Operations, eBusiness, Supply Chain, and Indirect Procurement). Primavera enabled HP to standardize on a single methodology for reporting on, monitoring, and assessing projects.
