Blocking spam in Enterprise IP Telephony networks

Overview This paper presents a new approach to detect and block unsolicited bulk calls in IP Telephony networks. Voice over IP (VoIP) technology introduces powerful choices to spammers and telemarketers. Most previous solutions ultimately imply other providers' capability and, more importantly, intention to have necessary policies and controls in place.

The proposed approach is based on the simple analysis of the VoIP signaling messages (set-up and termination requests). Once implemented on the call server, the method enables service providers or enterprises to block external spam sources targeting their voice networks. It can work as a turnkey solution, independent of other providers, with detection parameters defined by local policy.
