Case Study: Getting a Line on Infrastructure

Overview Brasil Telecom is one of the largest telecommunications companies in Brazil and the second largest broadband operator in Latin America. Given the substantial scope of its operation, Brasil Telecom sought best-of-breed ideas on how to closely manage its IT systems - 20 different applications, as well as ASP outsourcing, Internet data centers, video/audio/Web conferencing, hosting and management services for its corporate customers. Management knew that if Brasil Telecom wanted to be a major player in the country's communications industry, these applications and Web-based systems needed proactive monitoring. After extensive research, the company decided to pattern the management of its infrastructure after the IT Infrastructure Library, also known as ITIL, a catalogue of best practices in delivering IT services and support processes.
