Beyond ITIL CMDBs: The Benefits of Having the Richest, Most Pertinent Configuration Management Data Possible for Managing IT Services
Overview IT application services, unlike the physical architecture of the data center, require significantly more detailed configuration information to make adequate business and technology decisions. When ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) and ITSM (Information Technology Service Management) practices were conceived and CMDBs (Configuration Management Databases) described, the world followed a fairly simple client-server-operations model with management support from a well funded, specialized IT staff. Merging ITIL processes with a complete view of the operating environment minimizes error and risk while improving availability, responsiveness, and pro-activity. The result is that the best operating and organizational processes integrate with the best technical practices for a total service management solution.
