Overview The notion of a Configuration Management DataBase (CMDB) remains a confusing and sometimes even arcane topic to many in the enterprise management industry. However, the CMDB as the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) characterizes it, is rapidly growing in importance to both IT adopters and solution vendors, as it can provide a core enabling capability to promote more cohesive service management, or as ITIL defines it - IT Service Management (ITSM). This paper examines critical parameters of CMDB design and adoption in order to help IT planners better assess vendor solutions in context with some of the most critical issues surrounding CMDB implementations.
