Parallel Access Volumes, Multiple Allegiances, and Priority I/O Queuing White Paper
Overview The HP StorageWorks XP128/XP1024/XP10000/XP12000 Disk Arrays provide unique capabilities for the IBM eServer zSeries and OS/390 environments. This white paper describes two such capabilities, the compatible Parallel Access Volume (PAV) and multiple allegiances (MA), and shows how these functions can deliver significant value to customers. The simple concept behind PAV is that every disk has its normal "base" UCB, and also a number of "alias" UCBs, which means that it is possible to initiate concurrent I/Os to a disk - one through the base UCB, and the others through alias UCBs. A standard performance capability in the XP128/XP1024/XP10000/XP12000 Disk Arrays is Priority I/O Queuing.
