Dartmouth College Partners With HP for OpenVMS Upgrade

Overview Dartmouth, the nation's ninth oldest college and a member of the Ivy League, is a private, four-year, coeducational undergraduate college with graduate schools of business, engineering and medicine and 18 graduate programs in the arts and sciences. Dartmouth needed to upgrade the infrastructure supporting its home-grown general ledger application and human resources database. Multiple options were evaluated for upgrading the system. Most involved porting the general ledger over to a new operating system. But the school's HP consultant offered a much simpler solution: upgrade the O/S to a current version of OpenVMS, and run the legacy applications on HP AlphaServer systems with an HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array 1000 (MSA1000) for storage.
