Managing Forests With GIS, GPS and Digital Imagery
Overview Forest management activities have an inherent and important locational component which requires spatial tools. Traditional tools, like a chain and compass, have been used for decades and will continue to be used in the future. But as the demand for wood products increases, forest managers will need to improve their ability to meet society's needs. For this reason, forest management professionals are considering geospatial tools that computer technologies can offer. Handheld pen-based computers, such as the Palm, and compatible field-based GIS software can be easily customized for field forestry tasks. This paper summarizes current field GIS solutions that have been evaluated as part of the University of Minnesota and NASA-funded eForest project.
