A 3-axis Orthogonal Antenna for Indoor Localization

Overview To support recent location aware applications in indoor environments, many techniques and architectures have been developed for determining the physical locations of people and/or objects. This paper proposes a new 3-D Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) positioning system employing a 3-axis orthogonal array antenna. The antenna consists of 3 loop antennas of the same geometry and characteristics. One can determine the transponder position by comparing the strength and the phase shift of electromagnetic signals received from the transponder at each antenna. Specifically, the authors' design a new RFID reader with its location sensing module and validates the enhanced features of the proposed system through extensive simulations.
