Linux Uses Storage and Storage Uses Linux

Overview The interaction of storage and Linux occurs in two very different but related dimensions. Linux as a server operating system (OS) platform requires storage and supporting storage management and network data access software. Linux also serves as the underlying OS in storage control units to manage storage. There are no technological impediments to Linux's use of storage or vice versa; in fact, it is Linux's open source that allows straightforward ports from other Unix distributions to Linux and supports Linux use as the foundation of a storage control unit. Every high-end disk array subsystem from vendors such as EMC, HDS and IBM supports Linux files and interfaces.
