Linux on zSeries: Hardware and Software Encryption Performance for WebSphere Application Server
Overview IBM designs mainframes to provide an environment that is security rich and responsive. The use of cryptographic accelerator hardware is one of the ways that IBM designers respond to the problems of security and responsiveness. Since Secure Socket Layer (SSL) handshakes require extensive compute resource, the cryptographic accelerator hardware is used to offload the encryption/decryption tasks from the central processor. In this paper the Scalability Center for Linux explores the performance of Linux running on an IBM eServer zSeries 900 (z900) processor equipped with PCICA cryptographic accelerator hardware. IBM WebSphere Application Server software was used to drive a workload that simulates an on-line brokerage operation.
