Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Utilizes a Service-Oriented Architecture to Reduce Costs

Overview As New England's largest health plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) is consistently recognized for standard of service that are among the highest in the nation. The challenges facing BCBSMA included supporting a highly complex existing infrastructure, maintaining rigid, inflexible legacy systems, and controlling extremely high development and maintenance costs. In response to these business and technology challenges confronted by the existing infrastructure, BCBSMA chose to reengineer its systems architecture, introducing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) facilitated by SeeBeyond's integration platform. In addition to enabling BCBSMA to comply with HIPAA standards, the SeeBeyond solution also resulted in faster deployment and significant cost reductions around other business initiatives.
