Theory-Driven Design of Groupware for Collaborative Learning: Problems, Analogies, and New Hypotheses

Overview Information categorization in groupware to improve communication and coordination has been debated for many years. This paper examines two models of information categorization that has received considerably attention in two different research communities. Progressive Inquiry is a problem-based inquiry model for knowledge building environments. IBIS (Issue-Based Information Systems) is an issue-driven model for structuring design rationale. Although these models have emerged independently and in separate research communities (learning and design, respectively), the authors argue they merit comparison, even cross-fertilization, because they have similar goals and almost identical notational system.
