Availability and Performance Aren't Necessarily the Same Thing

Overview Telecom networks must have high reliability. But far too frequently, network operators specifying 99.999% availability are making the wrong demands. How many networks actually achieve five-nines, and how often? The network will have an outage at some point, and there needs to be a cushion for more than one. Five-nines becomes a hollow symbol without the accountability provided by outage reporting and analysis, automation, trouble tracking, self-healing, and more. In reality, the five-nines goal quickly morphs into a need for the network to just run well. This whitepaper briefly discusses what a management system needs to achieve that goal.
