Clearwire and the American WISPs: New Opportunities and Consolidation

Overview The long term promise of WiMAX networks may lie in licensed spectrum and mobility, but many of the early opportunities will lie in the unlicensed 5.8GHz band. This is especially true in the US, where licensed frequencies are held by only a few players and where high power allowances make the 5GHz bands appropriate for covering relatively sparsely populated rural areas. This promise, plus the increasing demand for broadband services in rural regions, is creating new interest among wireless ISPs and sparking a wave of consolidation.
