Analytical Model for Performance Evaluation of GPRS/EDGE Multi-Service Networks

Overview GPRS/EDGE networks are designed to transmit packet data. Several types of traffic with varying characteristics have to be supported by these networks. This paper proposes an analytical performance model for GPRS/EDGE networks in order to derive a simple relationship between cell capacity, traffic characteristics and performance. The model presented is based on the Modified Engset Model assuming a finite number of users generating infinite ON/OFF sessions and fair bandwidth sharing among active users. Exact and simple approximate performance formulas are derived from the model.
