Extra Capacity Case Study: Safaricom
Overview As a yearly event to raise money for the continued ecological management and operations of the park, Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom operator, hosts the Safaricom Marathon. Safaricom, a subsidiary of Vodafone and Kenya's first and leading wireless telecom provider, was in dire need of having a robust and reliable communications network up and running for the event. After learning of interWAVE's various deployments throughout Africa using compressed satellite backhaul as opposed to traditional microwave, Safaricom approached interWAVE with the task of shipping, installing and deploying a GSM cellular network covering the marathon's route within a three-week period of time-a daunting challenge for any technology provider, intensified by the logistical issues presented by location and terrain of the conservancy.
