Cisco Service Provider Solutions: MPLS VPN

Overview Cost effective, reliable and secure Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) offer companies a cost-effective, reliable and secure alternative to private networks. The VPN model keeps traffic and routing information from multiple companies segregated and partitioned over the same physical shared infrastructure, thereby offering economies of scale. MPLS is a relatively new technology, standardised by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), that emerged in 1997 from a number of prior technologies including Cisco's Tag Switching. The primary objective behind its development was to deliver faster, enhanced routing services based on flexible MPLS parameters encoded into a label. An MPLS label tells a device not just where to send packets, but also how to send them.
