Pioneering Wi-Fi Info System for Stockholm's Underground Railway Enhances Safety and Customer Satisfaction
Overview Stockholm Public Transport Authority, SL, wanted to boost customer and employee safety and satisfaction by delivering timetable disruption information to mobile staff on Stockholm's underground railway using handheld devices and Wi-Fi technology. A world-leading underground Wi-Fi network enables railway staff to send alerts and receive real-time traffic information on their handhelds. Devices are designed to function as "multi-toolboxes" eventually giving delivering applications such as ticket and fraud control, maintenance and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The system uses Intel processor-based servers in individual stations and at Connex Transport's Stockholm data centre with wireless handheld devices featuring Intel XScale technology.
