Internet Invoicing and Vendor Adoption: A Direct Commerce Whitepaper

Overview The transition from paper-based invoicing to electronic exchange seems inevitable, yet it has been relatively slow to happen. EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) was first pioneered in the 1960's and 1970's as a way to connect business partners with standardized protocols and file formats. XML is a recent technology that can build on many of the lessons learned through EDI - promising virtual marketplaces on the Internet where business partners may exchange XML-based transactions in a spontaneous, low-cost environment. Direct Commerce is part of an industry-wide effort to develop methodologies that will accelerate vendor adoption of Web based electronic invoicing based on XML.
