Technical Challenges of 40 Gbit/s in WDM Submarine Transmission

Overview There is a growing consensus that 40 Gbits/s channels will be introduced in optical systems in the years to come. This introduction is especially challenging in submarine links, since the distances to be bridged are longer. Major changes will need to be made to repeater technologies, fiber configurations and modulation formats in order to attain transpacific distances. Answering these challenges, Alcatel Research and Innovation reports the first successful laboratory transmission of 40 channels at 40 Gbits/s over 9,180 km with industrial margins.
