Access Network Enhancements for the Delivery of Video Services

Overview The delivery of voice and video services across access networks is much more demanding than the delivery of traditional high-speed Internet services. The sustained and peak data rates to users are significantly higher, pushing DSL capacity to the limits. In addition, the sensitivity to packet loss is greater, particularly in the case of video services. This paper discusses research into enhancements that can be made to DSLAMs to ensure that the most important packets are delivered during times of network congestion, and looks at efficient ways of providing targeted forward error correction for sensitive services such as video.
