Network-Centric Integrated Battlefield Picture: Toward Network-Centric Warfare for Commanders

Overview Network-centric warfare - key to dominating the future digital battlefield - depends on a distributed automated information system (AIS) able to give commanders the right data at the right time. This paper describes a layered architecture for a distributed AIS and a proof-of-principle prototype system demonstrating a network-centric integrated battlefield picture. The layered architecture links continuous dynamic data streams from many sources, including legacy systems. Existing systems can be integrated into the architecture without change. The result is rapid development of an integrated Common Operational Picture (COP) for military commanders.
