The Impact of HSPD-12

Overview The Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12) of August 2004 directs the Secretary of Commerce to establish a policy for a common, secure identification standard for all federal agencies. This standard will protect against a wide array of threats, including unauthorized access to government resources, identity theft and terrorism. By mandating a common identity standard for all federal government employees and contractors, HSPD-12 ushers in a new era of strong, multi-factor authentication that increases the security of networks, applications and data, while eliminating the risk of compromise due to poorly managed passwords. HSPD-12-compliant identification technologies will also improve efficiency when it comes to accessing data in highly secure environments.
