Cost Control - Risk Mgmt. White Papers

Alcoa Takes Control of Its Desktop Computers, Saves More Than $2 Million Annually

Overview Alcoa, the world's leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminium, faced a challenge: upgrade its operating system and implement managed client controls on approximately 23,000 of its computers in one year. In the past, critical security updates demanded huge costs - up to U.S.$2 million of labor per update - and took weeks to deploy across the company's 250 North American locations. Working with Microsoft Services, Alcoa created a foundation for swift and cost-effective updating. Together, they deployed a solution based on Microsoft Systems Management Server version 2.0 and Microsoft Windows XP Professional, which helped Alcoa update its computers in less than a year and 17 percent under budget.
