Retail Web Site Real Estate: The Path to Value

Overview Premium real estate is not unlimited, an issue print catalogs and physical retailers have dealt with for decades. Assigning values to screen real estate (e.g., pages and elements) enables methods for leveraging off-line learnings, thus providing retailers with insights into maximizing their online opportunity.

Many retailers view Web site real estate as unlimited and free. Unlike off-line retailers, only 20 percent of online retailers incorporate the metric of site real estate value into their business. A relatively small number of retailers focus on where they are losing customers and the productivity of cross-sell efforts. There are clear ways for online retailers to leverage off-line real estate valuation practices. Identifying proxies for valuing real estate is critical, as is maintaining a flexible approach to move products and categories.
