UMTS Location for Network Planning and Optimisation in Urban Areas

Overview This paper addresses the use of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) location-capable terminals for the purposes of network planning and optimisation. Potential UMTS location techniques are presented and the location performance of time delay and correlation based techniques is estimated by using impulse responses calculated by three-dimensional simulation techniques. An overview of the location-based applications of the IST Cello-project is given. Based on the obtained accuracy level, the Database Correlation Method (DCM) seems potential for the applications supporting network planning and optimisation in urban areas.
