Asymmetric Traffic Management in UMTS FDD With Additional Downlink Spectrum

Overview Asymmetric services with higher downlink traffic load are expected to dominate the service request to be supported by the forthcoming mobile communication systems like UMTS. The assignment of additional downlink spectrum for UMTS has been identified by WARC2000 as a straightforward way to increase downlink capacity. This paper proposes a Service Selection mechanism that effectively improves the spectrum efficiency, under specific hypothesis, and a Load based Inter-Frequency Handover that can provide relevant performance enhancement in a generic service scenario.
