Skills and Productivity in the UK Using Matched Establishment and Worker Data

Overview In this paper the authors use matched employer-employee data using the New Earning Survey (NES) and the Annual Respondents Database (ARD). The ARD has establishment level information on outputs and inputs, from which productivity is constructed (labour productivity and TFP). The NES does not have information on direct measures of the workers' education, qualifications or training. However, it does have information on occupation, age and wages, which in turn are correlated with workers' skills. Using the information available from the matched data, one can investigate if high productivity businesses differ from low productivity businesses in a number of skill dimensions.
