Economic Slowdown Hits State Budgets: What About IT Spending?
Overview State IT budget cutbacks are difficult to measure since the vast majority of states do not use any general funds to subsidize their operations. Instead, budget shortfalls must be measured as reductions in demand for goods and services, staff furloughs and purchases delayed or put off. Some states have also been asked to avoid equipment upgrades and to freeze new hires. The majority of states in a recent Backgrounder survey indicate that they are not looking to trim spending at this time. A majority of state IT agencies also do not foresee a reduction in demand for services from client agencies.
