Social Security Numbers: Governments Could Do More to Reduce Display in Public Records and on Identity Cards
Overview Today, the SSN has become a universal identifier; as such, it offers government as well as the private sector an efficient way to verify the identity and the qualifications of people for programs or activities ranging from taxes to health benefits to worker's compensation payments. As a single, unique number assigned to one person, the SSN also allows for tracking that individual through more than one database and comparing information for a variety of uses, including police work.
