Mexican Migrants and Other Latinos in the US Labor Market Since NAFTA

Overview The North American Free Trade Agreement did not have a dampening effect on Mexican migration to the US as was expected. Deteriorating employment conditions in Mexico have coincided with a continuing demand for cheap Latino labor in the US over the past several years, thus bolstering the migratory process. This paper will briefly analyze labor market conditions in Mexico to explain why low wage jobs in the US are so attractive to Mexican migrants. The paper will then proceed to examine labor market outcomes for these workers using data from the Mexican Migration Project, CPS data and Labor Department statistics.
