Federal Reserve Banks as Fiscal Agents and Depositories of the United States in a Changing Financial Environment

Overview Fiscal agent services have changed considerably since the Treasury first designated the Banks as depositories and fiscal agents in 1915 and 1916. As the financial services industry has grown, the needs of the government have also changed. In recent years, technological developments, many involving the use of web-based technologies, have opened new opportunities for the Banks and the Treasury to work together to improve government services to the public, much as financial services firms have used new technologies to improve services to their customers.
