An Affair of State: Apptis Deploys Intel Xeon Processor-Based Servers to Transform U.S. Passport Service Operations

Overview In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the United States government rushed to better secure its borders. Crucial to that effort: Redefining the process used to evaluate more than 7 million passport applications each year. But how could the State Department craft a more rigorous process without courting undue delays and sharply higher operating costs? Apptis, Incorporated deployed multi-processor servers utilizing Intel Xeon processors and Intel Pentium 4 processor-based desktops at 16 passport agency locations nationwide. The new systems run a suite of custom applications, providing significantly better performance while preserving "five nines" availability.
